………if Polydor had any sense they would put out the two Ants tracks from the Jubilee soundtrack as a single, in green vinyl or something. The Ants like The Banshees are creating something special. Beware……….

…..No, we are a group together, I write all the material and the others with me work together to arrange the compositions, we’re all good friends and each one as important as the other in making the Ants…….to me the important thing about being onstage is to perform, excite and entertain the people in the audience. I give 100% at every gig whether there are 5 people in the place or 500.…..Image is a dangerous thing to worry too much about, it has been known to take over the most important thing, i.e. the music, when I am identified with a certain image I shall change to another…...My make-up is as visual as my clothes, but both take the second placing to the actual music…..Jordan is a walking work of art, and the major question to be posed is “Does fashion end in passion”

“Adam Ant was bigger than the band - he was the band.” Johnny Bivouac

The Roundhouse supporting X-Ray Spex.

The breakthrough gig and my first Ant gig, the first throws of three chord Punk were already over , but with a background of the Pistols and heavy dub reggae something big was happening.

I loved the Roundhouse as a venue and did go to a few of other gigs there. Just an amazing venue and on this night an amazing overpowering atmosphere, the prolonged intro into Plastic Surgery as we waited for Adam and then chaos it was Johnny Bivouac and Jordans last gig with the band. It was obvious that Adam was going to be a star, but who would have predicted Jim’ll Fix It and Tiswas.

For the next couple of years I lived and breathed Adam and The Ants. The fact that like the Banshees they had no record deal made them even more exclusive, if you wanted to hear the music you had to go to the gigs. My Ant collection consisted of the Jubilee soundtrack album, live cassettes from Portobello Road market and the John Peel sessions I had taped from the radio.

During this time I saw the Ants at least fifteen times, many times at the Marquee in Wardour Street. It was great to be following a band from its almost early days with gigs at tiny venues, The Moonlight Club to the Lyceum, with the badges of an almost secret clan. The press seemed to hate The Ants and that made it even better we were part of an elitist club, and it didn’t matter that the band were disliked by the mainstream and the music press. It seemed a long way off when sitting at the Dominion Theatre in 1981with Mums, Dads and screaming children singing along to Stand and Deliver, Adam needed to be a star but to this day the early Antfans / Antpeople will always feel sold out. From such an Art School, underground background to I Love Adam poster magazines.

….the music’s becoming more thoughtful, and a bit more mellow, but I like to get the audience into a frame of mind where there just dreaming away, when suddenly we hit them in the head with 10,000 watts of pure energy. I think it’s dangerous to discuss music and to discuss art because it’s a gut feeling….as for the Nazi thing, the press and everybody believe I’m a Nazi. I state quite categorically obviously I’m not. I hate The National Front. I detest everything they stand for. I would have to be very stupid to be a Nazi, because I am a Romany gypsy, my drummer is mixed race and my manager is Jewish……….

…..Jordan parted company to do film work, which left us a bit distraught for a time. The Kid and then Johnny Bivouac both dropped off at various points and we gained Matthew, who is 17 years old and the best guitarist I’ve heard……they are hated by the press………

Release of Young Parisians / Lady (Decca F13803) Chart Position #9 two years later! (12/80)

………the single has to get into the top 75 for us to do an album. So if this doesn’t make it Friends will probably be the next single……..if the situation arises when none of our singles makes the top 75 we’ll release a bootleg album…..it’s very trendy to go with a small company but all they want to do is make themselves fat and rich, the thing to do is to sign to a big company who can promote you, get you albums and concerts, that’s what us and The Banshees have done, but I don’t think they’ll manipulate Polydor as well as we’ll manipulate Decca. Why destroy something when you can destroy it from the inside? Get inside and cause havoc……
